Alzheimer’s Touch Quilts
The Touch Quilt Program, in partnership with the Alzheimer Society of K-W, provide specially designed quilts that offer sensory stimulation to individuals with Alzheimer’s and dementia. These quilts can help reduce stress and anxiety while also providing warmth and security. Between 5 and 10 of these unique quilts are donated each year by WCQG members, in particularly Cathy J who revived this program after a period of stagnancy due to her commitment to this deserving cause.
This is a Waterloo County Quilters’ Guild sponsored outreach project.

Why Touch Quilts Matter
As Alzheimer's progresses, individuals often find comfort in tactile experiences. Touch Quilts are made with different textures and fabrics, allowing those with dementia to engage their sense of touch in a soothing and calming way. These quilts not only serve as a warm covering but also as a therapeutic tool that can bring peace and a sense of familiarity to those who need it most.
Touch Quilt Guidelines
To ensure that each quilt provides the right sensory experience, please follow the guidelines below:
Finished Size: Approximately 33 to 34 inches square.
Fabric: Use a variety of pre-washed, washable fabrics. This can include cotton, fleece, fun fur fabrics, satin, corduroy, viscose, flannel, and more.
Backing: Choose flannelette or fleece for the backing to add warmth and softness.
Batting: Use polyester, cotton, or a cotton-poly blend for the batting.
Construction of the Quilt Top
Cut 36 squares, each 6 inches by 6 inches, from your chosen fabrics.
Sew 6 squares together to form one row.
Repeat the above step to create five additional rows.
Sew all six rows together to form the quilt top.
Layer the quilt top, backing, and batting, then baste the layers together.
Quilting Methods
You can machine quilt or tie the quilt layers together, ensuring the quilt is secure and durable.
Labeling
Be sure to sign and date your quilt. A 3” x 4” solid colour label can be used for this purpose. For example:
